Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom Teeth Removal Near Meadow Springs
Wisdom teeth are the third–and final–set of molars that erupt in the back of the mouth, typically in late adolescence or early adulthood. In some cases, there is enough room in the mouth for wisdom teeth to erupt without causing problems. However, wisdom teeth can become impacted in other cases, meaning they cannot fully erupt through the gum line. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a number of problems, including crowding, pain, and infection. As a result, many dentists recommend removing impacted wisdom teeth to prevent future problems from developing.

Why Should I Remove My Wisdom Teeth?
Like most people, you will most likely have your wisdom teeth removed at some point. Wisdom teeth usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. They’re called wisdom teeth because they tend to come in when you’re a little older and supposedly wiser. But even though they’re called wisdom teeth, they’re not really all that useful. In fact, they can actually cause a lot of problems if they’re not removed.
Wisdom teeth can get stuck inside the jaw (impacted) when they fail to emerge properly. Infection or cysts can sometimes occur and damage other tooth roots or supporting bones. Wisdom teeth that are only partially visible create an opening for bacteria that cause gum disease and oral infections. Furthermore, wisdom teeth may crowd or damage nearby teeth if they don’t have enough room to grow in correctly.
That’s why your gentle dentist at Peel Dental Studio may recommend that you have your wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth removal is a fairly standard procedure, and our highly-trained team have the experience and skills to get the job done quickly and safely. So if your dentist recommends wisdom teeth removal, you can rest assured that you’re in good hands at Peel Dental Studio.

FAQ About Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth can sometimes become impacted, meaning they get stuck beneath the gum line or only partially emerge. When this happens, it can cause a number of problems in the mouth.
- Damage to other teeth.
Impaction of wisdom teeth may cause them to grow at an angle. The second molar or other teeth nearby can be damaged if wisdom teeth push against them. - Crowding.
The pressure exerted by wisdom teeth on other teeth can also result in crowding. Other teeth may become crowded and shift out of alignment. Orthodontic treatment may be necessary to straighten them. - Tooth decay.
It is more difficult to clean wisdom teeth because they can grow at an angle or partly erupt. A partially erupted wisdom tooth can easily trap food and bacteria between the gum and the tooth. Partially impacted wisdom teeth may be more susceptible to decay than other teeth. - Pericoronitis.
Pericoronitis is an inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the wisdom teeth. It typically occurs when a molar is partially impacted. Bacteria then accumulate around the soft tissue, which leads to inflammation. - Cysts.
Dentigerous cysts develop over impacted teeth. Though rarely dangerous, they are often painful. Dentigerous cysts are sacs filled with fluid that form over an erupted or partially erupted tooth. It occurs when fluid gathers between an impacted tooth's crown and the enamel.
The cost of wisdom teeth removal may vary based on factors like whether it’s a non-surgical or surgical procedure, the complexity of the procedure, and the number of wisdom teeth that need to be removed. Accordingly, prices start at $300 to $500 per tooth. Sedation or the use of anaesthesia will incur additional costs. Please schedule a consultation appointment at Peel Dental Studio so our dentists can perform a thorough examination and give you an accurate quote.
If your health insurance policy has a general dental extras cover, it might help pay for a basic wisdom teeth removal. Coverage for surgical extraction of wisdom teeth might require a major dental extras cover. It is best to contact your health fund provider to determine your dental health coverage.
The first step is to have your dentist take an X-ray of your jaw to determine where each wisdom tooth is located. Depending on your comfort level and the complexity of the procedure, they may administer local anaesthesia, IV sedation, or general anaesthesia during the procedure.
The next step is to make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone. Your dentist will then remove any bones that are interfering with your tooth's root. Following the removal of the bone, the wisdom tooth will be divided into smaller sections to make the extraction easier. They will then remove the wisdom tooth, its root pieces, and any extra bones.
Last but not least, the open wounds will be stitched up, if necessary, to promote healing. The extraction site will then be gauzed up for clotting to occur.
Dos:
- Apply a cold compress on your face to reduce swelling.
- Approximately a week may pass before you can open your mouth fully. It may feel stiff when you open your mouth. For two days following wisdom tooth removal, eat only soft, easy-to-chew foods, such as soups, smoothies, mashed potatoes, gelatine, yoghurt, and scrambled eggs.
- Open and close your mouth gently to exercise your jaw.
- Make sure to rinse your mouth gently with water. You may gargle with warm salt water 24 hours after surgery, but not earlier than that.
- Stay hydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of water.
- It is common for swelling, bleeding, and pain to occur after dental surgery. Be sure to take the medication prescribed by your dentist. Make sure to follow the aftercare instructions you are given regarding managing discomfort.
- You should contact your dentist if you experience pain or swelling that does not go away.
Don’ts:
- Don't drive or operate heavy machinery for the first 24 hours after the wisdom teeth removal procedure. This is especially important if general anaesthesia is used. Make sure someone drives you home from your dental appointment.
- Don't eat or drink hot foods or beverages to prevent burning the surgical wound.
- Don't eat nuts, seeds, and grains, like rice, sunflower seeds, and quinoa, because they could get stuck at the extraction site.
- Don't eat hard foods or foods that are difficult to chew, such as steaks and jerky, since these can cause stitches to open up and slow the healing process.
- Don't eat hot or acidic foods to avoid irritating your wound.
- Do not drink alcohol because it can irritate the area and make the pain medication you're taking less effective.
- Don't brush, spit, or rinse your mouth within 24 hours of dental surgery, as it can dislodge the blood clot. You can brush your teeth the next day. Be careful not to brush against any blood clots.
- Don't drink from a straw, and don't slurp vigorously from a spoon because you could cause the stitches or the blood clot to dislodge.
- Ensure you don't exert excessive force that could dislodge stitches or blood clots. Strenuous activity can interfere with the healing process and increase swelling, pain, and bleeding.
- Don't smoke or vape for a week after surgery to prevent dry sockets.
